The Tales of Beedle the Bard
After completing the final book in the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling wanted to present a special gift to the people who had been most closely associated with Harry. She produced seven individual copies of a volume of wizarding fairy-tales called The Tales of Beedle the Bard.
In December 2007, a copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard was sold at auction. This was the seventh edition of a handwritten and elaborately-finished run of just seven individual copies of this work.
Each book is unique: handwritten, illustrated on vellum, bound in brown morocco leather and mounted with different semi-precious stones. The auction of this one edition raised a record-breaking £1.95 million for the charity Lumos.
The dedication reads, ‘Six of these books have been given to those most closely connected to the Harry Potter books during the last 17 years. This seventh copy will be auctioned; the proceeds will help institutionalised children who are in desperate need of a voice. So to whoever now owns this book, thank you – and fair fortune be yours!’
Following the auction, the title became available to the general public. It was published by Lumos, in association with Bloomsbury Publishing Plc., and £1.61 from each sale of Bloomsbury's edition of The Tales of Beedle the Bard is donated to Lumos.
